Frankfurt Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport Enter into Strategic Partnership in the Cargo Segment

November 24, 2025

Frankfurt Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) are now working together as part of a strategic partnership. With the signing of a memorandum of understanding, the two airports are expanding their long-standing cooperation. The focus is on promoting targeted cooperation between partners in the respective airport communities, optimising regulatory processes and jointly tapping into new market potential. The partnership reflects Frankfurt Airport’s guiding principle – “Creating the Future of Cargo. Together.” – and underlines the common goal of both airports.

“The demand for air freight between Asia and Europe is growing rapidly. With Pudong, Fraport is gaining one of China’s largest cargo airports as a partner,” says Alexander Laukenmann, Head of the Aviation Business Unit at Fraport AG. “Our cooperation is an important step towards meeting the growing demands of international trade.”

Frankfurt Airport is one of Europe’s leading air freight locations and acts as an important hub between Asia and Europe. Both airports see the intensified cooperation as an opportunity to make international freight traffic even more efficient and future-oriented. Joint projects include a coordinated rapid response and communication mechanism to accelerate customs and regulatory processes, as well as other joint roadshows to build a more connected freight ecosystem.

China, as the world’s largest export country, shapes the international movement of goods. Online trade is also becoming increasingly important: around five million e-commerce shipments are processed at Frankfurt Airport every month. The strategic partnership with Shanghai Pudong aims to further improve cross-border settlement and set common standards.

One year after the successful Cargo roadshow in Shanghai The Memorandum of Understanding is a visible result of continuous exchange with the key players in the Chinese air cargo market. It marks the start of further international cooperation in strategically important markets.

The partnership with Shanghai Pudong is part of the comprehensive Master plan CargoHub Frankfurt, with which Fraport is expanding the competitiveness of the freight location in the long term.
