Joseph Sutter

2002 Hall of Fame Recipient

Joseph F. Sutter was the Boeing 747 chief engineer and his development of the aircraft has gone hand in hand with the development of the industry.

The 747F is the only commercial jet that was designed from the start as a freighter. The aircraft incorporated such innovations as the large side and nose cargo door for outsize loads, high cube pallet capability, advanced mechanized handling systems and other features that revolutionized cargo flows on trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic routes.

He is recognized as one of the pre-eminent aircraft designers of all time.
