- The different initiatives are structured around 3 action axis: Climate Change, Circular Economy and Shared Value, which target the protection and conservation of South America’s strategic ecosystems, the migration to a zero waste to landfill model, and the availability of its connectivity and capacity for the benefit of the region’s communities, respectively.
LATAM Group’s comprehensive sustainability strategy and significant progress have earned its cargo subsidiaries two recognitions (one from IATA and another from TIACA) in 2023.
The company’s strategy, established in 2021, focuses on Climate Change, Circular Economy, and Shared Value. Under these pillars, LATAM devised a 30-year roadmap aiming to be an asset in the countries where it operates, generating economic, social, and environmental value.
To meet its objectives, LATAM Group set a goal to reduce and offset 50% of domestic emissions by 2030 on the path to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The group also aimed to eliminate single-use plastics throughout their operation by 2023 and become a zero-waste-to-landfill group by 2027. Additionally, they committed to making their connectivity and capacity available for the benefit of regional communities through their Solidarity Plane program.
Cristina Oñate, VP of Marketing and Product Development at LATAM Cargo, emphasized, “As a group, we have set ambitious goals because we believe this is a necessity. This strategy and our objectives are the roadmap we have drawn up to deliver on this priority. We appreciate the recognitions received this year, as they validate that we are on the right path and motivate us to continue working strongly on our commitment to the planet and society.”
Under the Climate Change pillar, LATAM Cargo reached two agreements with strategic clients to fly with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reducing the carbon footprint of two projects. In 2023, the cargo division of the group conducted its first international flight with SAF from Europe to North America. Moreover, during the year the company collaborated with customers on emissions offsetting through their “1+1: Compensate to Conserve” program. On the Shared Value side, the company has 51 partnerships with various foundations and institutions across Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, supporting health, environmental, and natural disaster matters.
Within the Circular Economy pillar, LATAM Cargo’s employees researched and proposed innovative solutions to reduce, eliminate, or replace the use of plastics in cargo operations. They implemented three projects in Chile and Brazil, successfully reducing significant amounts of plastic since their
inception.
